Track Review: "Outer Space" by Kaneis featuring Novel

Despite new found popularity (for some), trance music still has an "underground" feel to it these days due to the many different labels releasing tracks. One of those labels is Omair Mirza's OHM Music, which has been featured a few times on this blog already. In fact, there seems to be a surge of different releases in different genres of electronic dance music recently.

"Outer Space" by Kaneis featuring Novel is another one of those tracks that can be well received for Big Room, House, Progressive House, and trance. The remixes by many in the industry are proving that when a track is great from the beginning, any take on it can be great. From the beat drops to the melodies to the vocals by Novel, this track needs to be added to your collection when it is widely released very soon!

Track Review: "Glorious Days" by Sunlight Project

The beauty of this blog is to discover new music through new artists. Thus, when word from OHM Music of another set of tracks were mentioned, it only made sense to check them out. Label owner Omair Mirza understands the quality of music, and it is showing through these upcoming releases.

Sunlight Project has garnered quite the following from their releases that many have found on their Soundcloud page.  Their versatility is shown through "Glorious Days" as other artists have given their spin via their mixes. It is nice to see a track with fundamental quality that can be great in many sub genres. If you haven't started to follow the label and their artist releases, it is recommended that you do as soon as possible!

Track Review: "Xplorer" by Anske

Yes, it is time for another review of a track out of the Coldharbour Recordings factory. The bias has been established, so deal with it. Anyway, Anske has been featured on this blog before, and the quality of his tracks do not go unnoticed. Do you have a favorite?

"Xplorer" has followed the formula of being an ID in sets by boss Markus Schulz as well as on Global DJ Broadcast. The track immediately begins with a driving beat, dark Coldharbour sound, and great melodies. Looking forward to hearing this track in future sets as well as supporting it when it has its wide release!

Album Review: 'Spirit' by Depeche Mode

When the news broke that Depeche Mode was returning with a new album and adjoining tour, fans and critics were a buzz. Let's face it, they have influenced many different artists in many different musical genres over the years. Their unique take on beats to accompany great vocals has been revered by many. It was nice to see a pre-sale for their tour to try to combat scalpers through a new method as well.

If you haven't picked up a copy of 'Spirit' or at least listened to their single "Where's the Revolution" after many performances on popular TV programs in recent months, then you have been misinformed. 'Spirit' is a brilliant, thought provoking, and relevant album. Highly suggest you listen to the DELUXE version all of the way through without skipping any songs. From the lyrics, to the accompanying music, this album defines their triumphant return.

Track Review: "State of Mind" by Arkham Knights

You should be aware of the quality tracks coming out of Coldharbour Recordings these days. The label may or may not be on your radar, but know the trance, progressive, and the like scenes are better for it. Without much further delay, Arkham Knights have produced another great track called "State of Mind". This track has been featured as an ID throughout sets by boss Markus Schulz for a few months now.

The brothers of Arkham Knights have become known for their consistency of great tracks. Thus, if you have heard this ID on Global DJ Broadcast as well, you knew it was them. The track has their signature Coldharbour sound followed by those melodies to put you in a state of trance. Due to their track record on this blog, there really isn't much more to say about this track other than support it when it becomes available!

Album Review: 'The Getaway' by Red Hot Chili Peppers

Have you figured out the subliminal theme featured on posts over time on this blog? In case you have not, the answer is career longevity. Despite the changes in the music industry over time or your changes in musical taste, one thing that out lives all, is longevity. An artist, band, DJ, producer, singer, musician, or what have you tends to gain respect as their career develops over time.

A band that is revered a lot over the years is none other than Red Hot Chili Peppers. They have produced great songs for more than 20 years. Some people out there may agree that it is hard to top the skills of bassist Flea. Their love for the state of California does not go unnoticed either. So without more delay, it's time to review their latest album 'The Getaway'.  From the title song "The Getaway", you will immediately find yourself immersed in the familiar, but new sounds from RHCP. The high quality of songwriting bleeds throughout the album.  The unique vocals from Anthony Kledis guide you through the journey. The bass lines from Flea are just as brilliant as ever. The percussion by Chad Smith followed by the guitar riffs from Josh Klinghoffer compliment each other so well.

Their current successful tour for this album shows just how fans still love RHCP, their music, and their unique personalities. It is highly recommended you pick up their album if you haven't already! Respect their influence on music when you listen to this album for the first time.

Musical Pet Peeves

Due to a current headline trending in the news, a good point came to mind. That is pet peeves of the musical variety. Yes, it is okay to have these.

1. The N-Word: Used in music since the 1980's, more specifically hip-hop/rap. Sure there was racial, oppression, and anger due to these issues in many communities in the United States and across the world. However, the use of this word as slang for "friend" has been over used, and spread to other forms of popular culture like movies and TV.

2. Talking Too Much During a DJ Set: Regardless of the genre, if you stop the vibe to talk or shout on the microphone....shame on you. Yes, the "hype man" became prevalent through the rise of hip/hop and rap, but bringing it to other genres just ruins the vibe. Yes you in the big room culture.  Example: "Put Your Heads Up!"

3. Sampling: Now this one is less of pet peeve than the others listed above, but one nonetheless. It has become a fall for those less talented out there. However, there are some great songs or tracks that has used this quality well. Tread lightly music industry.

Track Review: "Raker" by Daxson & Harry Square

The beauty of listening to Global DJ Broadcast every week or attending a set by Markus Schulz is hearing those "pesky" IDs.  You know the tracks that you hear, then immediately wonder who produced it. Well, "Raker" by Daxson & Harry Square is another one of those tracks from the Coldharbour Recordings factory. Just like all of the other quality tracks to come from the factory, this track follows the Coldharbour sound formula with those trance factors fans know and love.

The intro immediately gains your attention, then the intertwining of the melodies and beats is literally music to your ears. Yes, there may be a tad bias on this blog, but you can not deny the uniqueness and quality of tracks being released by all at Coldharbour. The track gets its OFFICIAL release June 5th, so be sure to pick up your copy!

Album Review: 'Blueprint' by Ferry Corsten

Those who have respect for the trance genre, usually also have a respect for Ferry Corsten.  The past year or more saw Ferry return to his alias (started with Tiesto back in the day) Gouryella.  The brilliant melodies produced under that alias were just as ground breaking as the show he presented at various events.

Then the announcement of a new concept album back under Ferry Corsten name excited the trance scene. Especially as "Venera [Vee's Theme]" under Gouryella was released, but included on the 'Blueprint' album. Check out A State of Trance, Corsten's Countdown, Global DJ Broadcast, or Group Therapy with Above & Beyond for more information from the man himself.

From start to finish this album is truly brilliant. Why? Well, it includes a story with narration along with great trance tracks to accompany those feelings provoked.  Regardless of your preference of Ferry or his various aliases, the music is great. The passion for science fiction is shown throughout the story.  The vocals and collaborations compliment the story.  Just support this album on any platform as the creativity from Mr. Corsten is so refreshing!

Track Review: "Destiny" by David Thulin & Euphoric Nation featuring Spencer Lloyd

As all who read this blog on a normal basis know, the purpose is to highlight talent or in some cases question it. The time has come to review a new trance track from OHM Music created by David Thulin, Euphoric Nation, & Spencer Lloyd. With the onslaught of love for specific sub-genres of trance over others, it is nice to return to the vocal trance roots through this track.

Let's begin with the music before we review the vocals. The introduction of the track actually isn't too exciting, but the beauty of trance is to wait till the beats drop or the melodies kick in via many forms. Trance can evoke many emotions in a short period of time, so keep listening for the cherry on top that is vocals performed by Spencer Lloyd. The collaboration among singer/songwriters with producers seem to keep on producing great tracks. Highly suggest you support this track on any platform upon wide release!

EP Review: 'Thankful' by New Kids on the Block

Preface: As somebody who "was" a Blockhead, the news of new music from this group was welcomed. Please refer to the previous song review on the blog as well.

Those faithful to this group, yes Blockheads, have been anticipating new music for quite some time. The constant touring and cruises have been nice, but let's face it the reunion of 2008 started by a new album; 2011 also brought a new album as well. So, even with solo projects between events, releasing new music shouldn't have been this hard.

Yes, this is a real review. An EP is nice, but with it ONLY having 5 new songs on it, the quality should be up to the quality released before, right? Well, sadly to say all of the songs seemed rushed. It is blatantly obvious Donnie, Jordan, and Joey run the show.  It would be nice to hear more vocals from Jon and Danny.  Thus, the roles of the group are even cemented into NKOTB history these days.

Now, with that being said, it is true that NKOTB is 'Thankful' for their fans. However, some of the lyrics on these songs seem to be corny. Not sure the humor was intended or the members are unaware. Either way, listen at your own discretion. Oh, and "Still Sounds Good" is the only catchy song due to the sampling and lyrics.

Track Review: "Afterworld" by Arkham Knights

As you may or may not be aware of, this blog has been showing a lot of love to the label spearheaded by Markus Schulz in the past year or so, yes Coldharbour Recordings. You may call it a bias, but as a trance music fan, you really cannot ignore the production value being released by all involved with the label.

As evident during sets at events throughout the world or even on your favorite radio show or podcast, Arkham Knights have released another gem in "Afterworld". The track has that dark, techno, progressive feel associated with the Coldharbour sound. Then the melodies kick in, and you are in for that trance euphoria that you strive to experience.  It is highly recommended that you support the track, and add it to your collection!

Track Review: "Running Up That Hill" by Dakota (Markus Schulz) featuring Bev Wild

A few months back during Transmission (all trance music festival) in Prague, during the set of resident Markus Schulz, you heard this vocal on top of a darker yet great trance beat. It fit perfectly in the set as well you are to expect when attending a set by the #UnicornSlayer.  As many trance fans and fans of Schulz do is to wonder what is the ID of the track.

Fast forward to now as we get closer to release of 'The Nine Skies' project by Markus Schulz under the Dakota alias, Global DJ Broadcast premiered the track "Running Up That Hill" as part of the new #InBloom edition. At first, the thought of a vocal track under the Dakota alias seemed weird. However, after about 5 different listens, the darker theme of the song from the intro with the great vocals from Bev Wild started to take place well along with the build up of beat drops and accompanying melodies.

Take a listen and expect to go on a journey with Dakota!

Track Review: "Breathing Again" by Dave Neven featuring NuttaLyA

In the genre of trance, many revere the sub-genre of vocal trance to be at the forefront. Thus, when vocalists collaborate with producers/DJs for a great track, the trance community embraces it well. In this case, the track "Breathing Again" by Dave Neven featuring NuttaLyA is one of those tracks. Dave Neven has been producing and remixing great tracks under the Coldharbour Recordings label in the past year or so, and is proving to be one of the sought after artists.

"Breathing Again" features the vocals from NuttaLyA. Her voice is obviously great, and is designed for this track under the theme Mr. Neven has created. The alignment with the Coldharbour sound mixed the familiar trance sound just works. As this has been featured in sets and radio shows/podcasts in recent weeks, look for this track to continue to be featured as a well embraced vocal trance track for time to come. In fact, it could be the beginning of great like productions in the future.

Please support this track on Beatport as well as other platforms!

Event Preview: Dreamstate San Francisco

Have you heard of Dreamstate? Chances are that if you are trance music fan, you have. The infant, yet popular division of Insomniac was introduced in 2015, and has been gaining momentum ever since! From the popularity of the festival in Southern California, to the stage at EDC (Electric Daisy Carnival) 2016, to the upcoming couple of days during Memorial Day weekend. All 3 days of EDC 2017 are even slated to include a dedicated stage.

Dreamstate has become a symbolic yet necessary event for the trance scene.  The claims that trance has been making a comeback or returning or any other related semantics has fueled this. However, for all of the fans and artists that have never abandoned the scene to begin with, these events show the power of trance as a music genre.

The best part about the line-up of artists is the diversity of sub-genres and skill levels by all involved. For instance, Markus Schulz is bringing back his alias Dakota, Paul Oakenfold is bringing back Generations, PureNRG (Giseppe Ottaviani & Solarstone) will be bringing a back-to-back set, and many are anticipating Liquid Ace (Liquid Soul & Ace Ventura back-to-back).

Please enjoy this Spotify playlist curated by the team of Dreamstate Ambassadors!

Track Review: "Lucid" by Dan Thompson

As a trance music fan or part of the #TranceFamily, times are really exciting right now from "the comeback" or "resurgence" of the genre to the new popularity and bigger events to even the quality of trance music being produced.  As many who have or will read this blog will know that the fine folks of Coldharbour Recordings (spearheaded by Markus Schulz) are releasing some great tracks consistently.

Thus, the latest release from DJ/Producer Dan Thompson on the label has been well received. Armin Van Buuren featured this release on A State of Trance 800.  The track has also been featured in sets an other well respected radio shows/podcasts.  The introduction of the track leaves you to figure out where the track is going to go, then the melodies kick in followed by the beats.  This track really does embody the dark, but still trance that the Coldharbour family continues to produce.

Please support this track on Beatport and any other platforms!

Track Review: "Mota-Mota" by Dakota (Markus Schulz) & Koen Groeneveld

It's been since 2011 Dakota the darker, deeper, alias from Markus Schulz officially had a release. However, the #UnicornSlayer has alluded to the alias being present throughout his sets and productions constantly in many interviews. Many die hard fans or #SchulzArmy welcome this alias with open arms.

This brings us to the latest track "Mota-Mota" featuring the talent of Koen Groeneveld. The track begins with a mysterious intro followed by a dark groove to get you in the mood. Then the melody kicks in giving you a since of the trance you know and love from Markus. The collaboration of dark, progressive trance plus techno allows you to dig deeper into your soul. As evident by recent articles and interviews about this upcoming 'Nine Skies' project.

Top Trance Radio Shows/Podcasts (Part 2)

Solarstone has made a name for himself in the trance scene for his commitment to Pure Trance via his record label of the same name. It only made sense for him to launch a radio show/podcast of the same name as well.

If you haven't figured it out already, when you create a trance label, the trend is to create a radio show/podcast to showcase the music. Thus, Giuseppe Ottaviani has created Go On Air radio to match the label of the same name.

The Future Sound of Egypt label has been prolific in bringing trance of the uplifting kind as well as trance from around the world with direction from Aly & Fila.  It only makes sense to share these vibes through the radio show/podcast of the same name.

It should go without saying, but this blog would be remiss if A State of Trance (ASOT) by Armin Van Buuren was not listed. This very popular radio show/podcast has done a lot for the trance scene as a whole, and it is all thanks to Mr. Van Burren.

Top Trance Radio Shows/Podcasts (Part 1)

This long standing radio show by Markus Schulz featuring trance from around the globe including Coldharbour Recordings. Subscribe to the podcast at http://markusschulzpodcast.com or Stitcher.com OR

Trance legend Paul Van Dyk has been producing Vonyc Sessions for quite some time now. The radio show/podcast features trance from around the globe as well as Vandit Records.

This interactive chart show features trance and other electronic dance music every week, but the catch is that the fans get vote on their favorites to create a "top 3".  Check out http://corstenscountdown.com for more information!

Although this radio show/podcast may not have been around as long as some already mentioned, Cosmic Gate has done well showcasing trance from around the globe as well as their label Wake Your Mind Records.  Check out http://cosmic-gate.de/ for more information.

Many years ago the trio of Above & Beyond had a radio show called Trance Around the World (TATW), well, it has morphed into the popular radio show/podcast Group Therapy.   The show has evolved to mean a lot to fans of Above & Beyond and/or Anjunabeats/Anjunadeep labels.

Song Review: "One More Night" by New Kids on the Block

Once upon a time, this blog followed the music from New Kids on the Block after their "reunion" began in 2008.  Since then most posts were moved over to a personal blog due to their lack of new music, but more events/tours.

Let's fast forward to present day, last night on The Late Late Show with James Corden, when NKOTB debuted their new single "One More Night" via a performance. The anticipation for new music has been brewing since the release of their album "10" in 2011.  Their fan base known as "Blockheads" have been loyal enough to follow regardless, but it is nice to see the release of new EP coming before The Total Package Tour with Paula Abdul & Boyz II Men begins this summer.

Will you be pre-ordering this EP to receive "One More Night" early?

Track Review: "Chasing Lights" by Monoverse

Monoverse may be new to you if you are new to the trance music scene, but if you have been following his releases on various labels or experienced any of his sets recently, you know Monoverse is making strides. Monoverse just recently signed with Aly & Fila's Future Sound of Egypt, and with the release of Chasing Lights" will join the already well known label.

"Chasing Lights" follows the uplifting style of trance that FSOE (Future Sound of Egypt) is known for while maintaining that hint of mystery during the beat drops. Look for this track to be featured in upcoming sets and radio shows/podcasts.  Pick up your copy on your favorite platform of choice!

Track Review: "Edge of Time" by Nifra featuring SERI

The last time the "Queen of Trance" (Nifra) teamed up with SERI, they produced a brilliant vocal trance track in "Army of Lights".  With the landscape of trance mostly dominated by men or males, it is nice to see that a female collaboration can be successful and spark another idea.

This is how we get to "Edge of Time" that will be released by Coldharbour Recordings.  The track has that "Coldharbour Sound" mixed with great drops and beats to keep you interested. Then SERI jumps in with those flawless vocals to keep you intrigued and hopeful that the track will be even more uplifting.  Great vocals with great music should not be forgotten in the current trance scene. Vocal trance is still as important as it ever was in the beginning of the genre.

Make sure to pick up your copy when it's officially released March 27th!

Band Highlight: The Idolins

"The Idolins are a Nottingham based folk / acoustic pop act who’s sound is built around the beautiful and heartfelt storytelling of Karen Smalley, delivered by ear-catching vocals and finely laced harmonies, across an evocative, melodic musical mix of slithering strings and iridescent percussion.” 2017 sees the introduction of Tom Dukes on bass guitar after the departure of cellist Hannah Barrs."

The Idolins are:

Karen Smalley - Guitar & Vocals
Nick Scott - Guitar / Mandolin / Banjo / Vocals
Bar Morton - Electric Guitar / Vocals
Mark Rice - Drums / Percussion
Tom Dukes - Bass

Their latest single has also been reviewed by Nusic.
"A beautiful, haunting piece of music. Karen’s soothing voice contrasts the stunningly somber soundscapes provided by her fellow band members, plus guest appearances from Rob Rosa and Karen’s own daughter. It’s the kind of composition you just have to sit back and get lost in. And believe me, you will want to get lost in this gorgeous world.”     By Sam @ Nusic.org.uk

And Andy Proctor of The Pro-Cast
"Awesome! The Idolins are back and bigger than ever. A great first single from the new EP, it's beautiful and haunting in all the right places.” By Andy @ The Proc-Cast

Track Review:"Skygarden" by Daxson

Have you ever heard an ID during a set, and thought, "I have to get my hands on this!" That was the reaction of most #SchulzArmy soldiers that have attended any recent sets from Coldharbour Recordings label owner Markus Schulz.

This brings us to Daxson, who has already released great trance tracks, but with this new alias, another Coldharbour hit has been produced. "Skygarden" begins with an intro that catches your ears, then the dark melodies kick in, followed by the build up to the drop.  You can not help but fall in love with this track as a trance fan.  Take a listen for yourself, then add this track to your collection via Beatport today!

Track Review: "Cosmic" by Danilo Ercole

The last time Omair Mirza's label was mentioned on this blog was for one of his own tracks. However, this time, let us acknowledge the addition of a track by Danilo Ercole who is under the Black Hole Recordings umbrella. Mr. Ercole has produced great trance tracks in recent years, and after listening to "Cosmic", it does not look like he will be slowing down anytime soon.

After listening to the "teaser", as the official release is around the corner, this track will be included in future sets and radio shows/podcasts for years to come. The production of the track is clearly quality, and will please all trance fans. From the melodies to the beat drops, the depth in "Cosmic" will hit those emotions you experience as a trance fan.  In fact, curious to hear the remixes of the track as well. Take a listen to the teaser, and be ready to support this track on Beatport and other platforms when officially released.

Listen and sound off on this track here!

Album Review: 'Materia' Chapter One by Cosmic Gate

In the trance music scene, there is a sense of longevity with certain DJ/Producers.  For this, the scene has seen the duo of Cosmic Gate become one of those artists. As electronic dance music as a whole has gained popularity, the scene tends to respect those artists who produce great music, and provide a great experience during a set.  Just like other artists within the scene, the sound evolves over time, but remains trance in nature.

Knowing this, the release of their album 'Materia' has been anticipated for some time with the singles "Fall Into You" featuring JES, "am2pm", "Halo", & "Dynamic" with Ferry Corsten. This blog has explained the unique way artists collaborate either through the production of a track to including a great vocalist.  As Cosmic Gate has announced this nine track album is "Chapter One", and there is more great tracks to come. Have you picked up your copy on platforms yet? As a trance fan, you should.

E.P. Review: Darkside E.P. by Dave Neven

As a follower of this blog you may have noticed the influx of posts for artists on the Coldharbour Recordings label.  Depending on your knowledge of Trance music and the scene you might also be aware of the quality of tracks being released from this label. Thus, it brings us to the latest E.P. release by DJ/Producer Dave Neven.  Dave has been producing some great remixes for the label as well as sets mostly witnessed during one of the popular Coldharbour Nights.

The E.P. is comprised of tracks "Darkside", "Resurgence", and "Oubliette", all of which bring that familiar Coldharbour sound to the trance scene. It's clear Mr. Neven is on track to a great 2017 production wise, and looking forward to what is in store. Please support these tracks on Beatport at your earliest convenience, and let the melodies sooth your soul.
